Operations Director
ABOUT VIDERE
Videre is an award-winning, UK-registered NGO that exposes human rights abuses and holds perpetrators to account. We work directly with communities in stressed environments, equipping networks of activists and community leaders with the technology and training necessary to safely capture visual documentation of political violence, human rights violations, and other systemic abuses. Our aim is to ensure that the concerns and knowledge of affected communities drive advocacy, policy, and legal action. We currently have teams and partners in six countries and support staff in three further countries.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Videre is looking for an Operations Director to oversee internal administrative and support functions and infrastructure.
This role ensures that Videre operates efficiently and in alignment with its values, governance and strategic plan, driving culture and behavioural change. The Operations Director is a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT) and will work closely with other senior leadership to strengthen organisational capacity, improve operational systems, and support long-term sustainability.
Line Manages: Head of Finance and Compliance, Security Manager, Administrative and Human Resources Coordinator, IT Manager, Database Manager
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership and Strategy
- Lead the development and implementation of operational plans that support the organisation’s strategic goals.
- Identify and act on opportunities to improve processes, systems, and workflows across departments.
- Oversee daily administrative and support functions, ensuring compliance with organisational policies and applicable regulations.
- Work with programme leads to ensure operational support for programme delivery and growth.
- Coordinate cross-departmental processes that enhance programme effectiveness.
- Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO on operational priorities and resource needs.
Human Resources and Policy
Work closely with the Administrative and Human Resources Coordinator to:
- Drive our approach to People and Culture, developing and implementing human resources policies that support equity, inclusion, and staff well-being.
- Oversee human resources functions, including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and employee relations.
- Lead the drive for Videre to become gender transformative, following our Strategic Plan.
- Manage and mentor direct reports, bolstering our collaborative and mission-driven workplace culture.
- Review, refine and develop key operational policies, including data protection and privacy, safeguarding, anti-corruption and money laundering, health and safety, people and culture, and security.
Security and Risk Management
Work closely with the Security Manager to:
- Drive organisational cultural and behavioural change to ensure an appropriate security mindset, in line with our organisational risk appetite
- Upgrade and maintain organisational policies and risk-management frameworks.
- Oversee safety protocols, crisis preparedness, and operational continuity plans.
- Review and conduct risk assessments and maintain risk register.
Finance and Compliance
Work closely with the Head of Finance and Compliance to:
- Manage budgeting, financial planning, and internal controls, preparing information and responses for SMT and Directors as required.
- Ensure operational compliance with legal, financial and grant / contractual obligations.
- Develop creative solutions to securely transfer funds to projects, ensuring compliance with financial policies and confidentiality requirements.
- Ensure operational processes, particularly fund management, comply with risk management and financial controls.
- Ensure the SMT and Head of Development have all required information for fundraising outreach and decision making.
- Oversee and assist with annual auditing processes for multiple entities as required.
Information Technology
Working closely with the IT Manager:
- Oversee the IT department, including infrastructure, cybersecurity, systems administration, and application support.
- Ensure the reliability, availability, and security of all technology systems and data.
- Lead IT strategy, roadmaps, and digital transformation initiatives aligned to organisational goals.
- Oversee implementation of new systems and ensure user adoption.
- Ensure disaster recovery, business continuity, and incident-response procedures are operational and tested.
- Establish IT policies, governance frameworks, and compliance standards (e.g., ISO 27001, SOC 2, GDPR).
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Essential
- Experience of organisational change management across an organisation or large department
- Strong understanding of financial management across multiple entities, income streams and cost centres including multiple registered entities.
- Strong understanding of IT systems, networks, cybersecurity principles, and data governance.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and strategic planning skills.
- Effective leadership and people-management abilities.
- Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and drive operational improvement.
The ideal person does not need to be a technical expert in any or all areas
Preferred
- An understanding of human rights and a strong belief in their indivisibility and interdependence.
- Experience managing security challenges in difficult environments, including conflict zones.
- Additional language skills beyond English, especially French.
APPOINTMENT TERMS
Location: Nairobi, Kampala or Bangkok preferred. Remote applicants will be considered. Approximately 20 days travel per year expected.
Compensation: Salary is dependent on location. The equivalent of a UK salary of £72,000 plus pension contribution will be converted according to location using ICSC scales and paid in local currency.
