IJM Ghana partners with Ghanaian government agencies to tackle human trafficking by rescuing victims, ensuring perpetrator accountability, restoring survivors to safety and strength, and supporting public justice actors to strengthen systems that protect the vulnerable.
ABOUT THE ROLE
For over 25 years, IJM has pioneered the work to protect vulnerable people from violence. 9 out of 9 times in the last decade, IJM’s Justice System Strengthening Projects have reduced slavery and violence between 50 and 85% for very large populations of people in poverty.
As we grow to expand our impact to protect 500 million people from violence, we are seeking an Attorney to handle all legal aspects of a casework file.
Once assigned a specific case, an Attorney builds a strategy around the case and works with government partners to drive convictions of IJM sponsored arrests. Attorney will also engage in external legal training for government partners such as prosecutors, police officers, DSW workers, court staff and/or judges, and internal trainings for IJM staff. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Kumasi Projects, this role is based in Kumasi, Ghana.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Engaging the criminal justice system through IJM cases and working with partners to execute IJM’s theory of change
- Helping the legal team to meet annual legal Dashboard objectives and results
- Successfully engaging in IJM’s rhythms and core values
- Adhering to IJM’s staff health and safety policies
- Building strategic relationships with prosecutors and court personnel to effectuate IJM’s theory of change
- Appear in court and successfully advocate on all assigned IJM cases
- Research applicable law and update Justice Sector Manager as necessary
- Assist police in case analysis and necessary follow-ups
- Assist DPP with appellate arguments and briefs
- Travel on rescue operations as a legal consultant
- Draft necessary memorandums, briefings, and charging sheets for court
- Cultivate and maintain IJM internal legal casework files
- Regularly update JDS and all other internal systems with relevant legal data
- Conduct external legal trainings for partners
- Conduct internal legal trainings for IJM staff
- Meeting with external stakeholders
- Providing legal advice to IJM partners
- Accounting for logistical execution of internal and external training events
- Make sure that the office is in compliance with the laws of Ghana
- Carry out additional assignments as required by the Director, Anti-Trafficking Projects.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Graduate degree in law or bachelor’s degree and relevant work experience
- Minimum 3 years of successful legal practice in Ghana
- Presently licensed to practice law in Ghana and member in good standing at the Ghana Bar Association
- Proven ability to lead cross-culturally to achieve significant outcomes and impact
- Effective networker with proven track record of engaging key stakeholders needed to accomplish significant objectives

APPOINTMENT TERMS
Location: Kumasi, Ghana. Applicants must have the pre-existing legal right to work in Ghana. IJM is not able to offer relocation (domestic and international) and immigration support for this position
Salary and Benefits: Competitive within industry standard, as well as other benefits such as medical insurance and a staff care package
Contract length: Permanent
